SUMMARY:ENDING THE VIOLENCE IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO WEBINAR\, Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Thurs March 20\, noon Pacific time\, Zoom \nPlease join Views from the Democratic Republic of Congo: Prospects for International Solidarity and Peace\, a webinar with two Congolese women and one Congolese man\, which will highlight personal narratives and rich perspectives on the solutions to conflict in the DRC.  This event has the participation of International Fellowship of Reconciliation as well as the Congolese FOR and is being promoted by FOR-USA. \nSince the beginning of 2025\, the conflict in eastern Congo (DRC) has again escalated\, with thousands killed and the horrific raping and burning alive of hundreds of female inmates at a prison in Goma. This international webinar\, consciously held during Women’s History Month\, brings three leading peace practitioners from the DRC in conversation about the current crisis\, its historic roots and global context\, as well as potential paths to peace. Focusing on international solidarity and intended primarily for a non-Congolese audience\, the discussion will review the early days of resource wars in one of mineral-richest countries in the world (including the assassination of Patrice Lumumba spotlighted in the recent film Soundtrack of a Coup D’etat). Discussion will include the region-wide Congolese wars\, which over the last 30 years have claimed over 5.4 million lives – the most devastating (but under-reported) loss and displacement of life since WWII. With an emphasis on what concerned people around the world can concretely do to help bring about peace with justice\, we’ll conclude the webinar with an inter-active question and answer period. \nRegistration https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/t606mL0YSUCYACi8BkiEXg#/registration
