Help Move SJM 8014 on Afghan War & Its Costs to the Floor
Sign the petition to move Senate Joint Memorial 8014 out of the Rules Committee and to the Senate floor. The deadline is Tuesday, February 14 at 5 pm. SJM 8014 requests a reduction in federal military spending and ending the war in Afghanistan. While similar efforts passed the National Mayors’ Conference in 2011 and a number of city councils (including Seattle, and, recently, Portland OR and Charlottesville VA), WA could be the first state to take such a stand.
You can watch the testimony from Feb 2 hearing before the Government Operations Committee at: http://t.co/EWNgrTDU
We need your help to get 8014 passed in the WA State: At least one Senator on the Rules Committee must choose to pull the bill to the floor for a vote! We know of no other state government that has gone this far to voice opposition to dependence on war, death and destruction. Help WA State set an example.
Please take a few minutes to contact Majority Leader, Senator Lisa Brown (D) of Spokane. Urge Sen. Brown to take on this historic task and move Joint Memorial 8014 directly to the floor of Legislature for vote. Call Sen. Lisa Brown 360-786-7604 and e-mail her at Lisa.Brown@leg.wa.gov Also cc: your e-mail to Sen. Brown’s Legislative Assistant, Jeannine Roe: Jeannine.Roe@leg.wa.gov In the subject line of your email we suggest: “Pull SJM 8014 from Rules & send to floor.” We must act now. The deadline is Tuesday February 14 at 5 pm. After that, the memorial can not be voted on.
We also encourage you to contact members of the Rules Committee, especially if you are a constituent.
Joint Memorial 8014 from Washington State urges President Obama and Congress to immediately stop the war in Afghanistan; bring our troops home and redirect military war spending towards the human needs of the men, women and children of our state and country. It pressures them to provide for the strengthening our the safety net and infrastructure, here, at home instead of increasing U.S. dependency on an economy based in war, death and destruction.
