Expressions From Ellen

by Ellen Finkelstein

Thinking about WWFOR, resilience, and harnessing our passion and values.  Resilience is: (1) the power or ability to return to the original form, position, etc., after being bent, compressed, or stretched; elasticity. (2) ability to recover readily from illness, depression, adversity, or the like; buoyancy.

In this Pacific Call, Mike’s article talks about bringing together FOR allies to act more successfully on concerns about horrific costs of war and the impact on those most vulnerable. We have an opportunity to act to make a difference in coming weeks and to build the foundation for future action. Glen’s article speaks to FOR values & priorities about the planet. The Nov 10 WWFOR Fall Retreat addresses climate crisis & the coal train. The “scoping” hearings (Nov 13 in Seattle, and elsewhere: see www.wwfor.org) are a chance to make our voices heard. There is inspiring work going on across the Pacific Northwest, a Defend Our Coast rally in Victoria, BC brought together Canadian & U.S. activists, led by First Nations people. We are working with others to link constituencies and build for ongoing action. Jody’s testimony to the impact of drones calls on us to act to stop our government from using drones in Pakistan and elsewhere. A Seattle Police Department’s community forum to show off their new drone was disrupted by many concerned about the use of drones here. Larry’s reflection on his trips to Afghanistan & Viet Nam offer some insight into compassion, hope, & the challenges of waging peace.

WWFOR, our allies, the planet are at a crossroads. We face enormous challenges. Yet we also can see tremendous potential – to reach beyond our narrow boundaries, to build effective links, to bounce back and reach out for all that we dream.
