Celebrate! The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons
The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons taking effect on January 22, 2021, is a new law gaining acceptance within the international community, which re-emphasizes the illegality and moral shock at the existence of nuclear weapons. This is already specified by provisions of the Geneva Convention and the Law of Armed Conflict, better known as International Humanitarian Law. Countries which ratify this treaty and incorporate it into their own domestic legal systems are then strictly prohibited from: a) manufacturing, b) stockpiling, c) transferring, d) developing, e) testing, f) producing, g) possessing, h) using, i) hosting, j) assisting, k) researching, l) conducting exercises, m) storing, or n) enticing or encouraging anyone to test these weapons, to use or to threaten to use them. Potentially affected are all countries, militaries, corporations, universities, laboratories, or individuals involved in these processes, as more of the world’s governments ratify and domestically enforce this treaty. Your support informing all citizens of this law, encouraging divestment from entities violating its provisions, and seeking support for universal ratification of the treaty will help eliminate nuclear weapons worldwide. Join in activities on January 22nd or create your own banners, signs, handbills, or messages for spreading the word that day and beyond. Don't forget to celebrate!
