Seattle FOR Program on Nonviolent Peacemaking

May 15 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Zoom, on internet

Sun May 15, 6:30 - 8 pm, Zoom Seattle Fellowship of Reconciliation presents Kathy Railsback on “Practicing Nonviolence in a Time of War.” Kathy Railsback became a resident activist at the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action in February 2022. She first became an activist while working on the Equal Rights Amendment campaign in the late 1970s. In the 1980s she worked with refugees in Southeast Asia and went on to attend UCLA Law School. She has worked as an immigration attorney for most of the past 30 years, first in Seattle, then in Idaho, handling naturalization, asylum and refugee matters, as well as family and employment-based cases. In the late 90’s Kathy became active with Christian Peacemaker Teams and the Mennonite church. With CPT, she joined local protests against the Navy’s activities in Vieques, Puerto, and also promoted CPT’s efforts to stop the marketing of violent toys and video games to children. Between 2001 and 2021, Kathy and her family lived in Idaho, where she volunteered with the Idaho Peace Coalition and served as its incorporator. She also worked closely with the International Rescue Committee, Immigrant Justice Idaho, Catholic Charities, and the Idaho Office for Refugees. She is an oblate with the Benedictine Monastery of the Ascension in Jerome, Idaho. In 2013, Kathy became certified as a facilitator with Healing and Rebuilding Our Communities, a trauma education and resilience program developed with the support of Friends Peace Teams by genocide survivors in Rwanda and Burundi. She has since traveled many times to East Africa and co-facilitated workshops in various countries, with a focus on the DRC and the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya.  Her work with war survivors has strengthened her belief in the need to promote nonviolence as a way of life. She also learned in East Africa that helping individuals heal from trauma can strengthen families and communities and can lead to the prevention of conflicts. She sees the production and possession of nuclear weapons as an outgrowth of the mistaken view that we can find peace through creating fear of violence. info 206-789-5565 or https://wwfor.org/calendar/ ZOOM INFO Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87371368515?pwd=TlVnWllkVExuOFE2elFEaWdOdUVqUT09 Meeting ID: 873 7136 8515 Passcode: 942201 One tap mobile +12532158782,,87371368515#,,,,*942201# US (Tacoma) +16699009128,,87371368515#,,,,*942201# US (San Jose) Dial by your location +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 558 8656 US (New York) Meeting ID: 873 7136 8515 Passcode: 942201 Find your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kcUq3njY7S
