by John Repp In Christopher Boehm’s earlier book Hierarchy in the Forest: the Evolution of Egalitarian Behavior (1999), he describes how hunter-gatherer and horticultural societies created egalitarian societies. The band or tribe members co-operated to prevent “alpha” type males from dominating their group. Having language helped them achieve this political equality. Boehm is an anthropologist and a primatologist and has studied egalitarian band, tribe and village customs and chimps in the wild. Without language that allows them to communicate and better cooperate, chimps end up with hierarchical societies. Human’s egalitarianism is not exactly “natural”–i.e., DNA driven–but is made possible like abilities like language facilitated by DNA. by Larry Kerschner There are two books that I have read recently that I recommend.  The first is How to Create a Mind by Ray Kurzweil.  Kurzweil created the flat scanner and the text-to-speech and speech-to-text programs we use every day among many other inventions.  This book looks at the possibility (and likelihood) of creating a synthetic neocortex that in many ways could surpass the human mind.  He bases his predictions on the idea that the human brain is basically a pattern recognition device and its basic function is to predict the future.  Recent science shows that we perceive the bare outline of events and reconstruct memories in an ordered sequence, and our ability to fill in the blanks provides…

Idle No More began in Canada in October 2012 when four First Nation women felt an urgency to address Bill C-45. Idle No More “calls on all people to join in a revolution which honors and fulfills Indigenous sovereignty which protects the land and water. We must…live the spirit and intent of the treaty relationship, work towards justice in action, and protect Mother Earth.” This grassroots movement has spread throughout Canada and into the U.S. with social media, flash mobs, demonstrations.
