Come to Spring Assembly

WWFOR’s 2013 Spring Assembly on April 20, 2013, “Challenges of Nonviolence and Sustainability,” will feature a short keynote address by mild-mannered but fearless priest Bill (“Bix”) Bichsel of Tacoma on the encouragement he felt from meeting with Scottish and British anti-nuclear activists last fall that we can do away with nuclear weapons. Workshops will focus on both economic and environmental justice and on the effectiveness of nonviolent means for bringing about sustainable change.

Much that we see and experience in our current world disturbs and disappoints us: jobs continue to disappear; our economic system encourages us to spend, accumulate stuff, and then throw it away—and then scolds and punishes us for not saving; hundreds of millions of dollars (and a whole lot of venom) go into political campaigns, with outcomes that don’t necessarily result in better living conditions or greater justice for the vast majority of our population; we sense our population (and ourselves!) becoming less physically and mentally healthy than a generation or two ago and recognize that we need a sense of community to heal ourselves—but are too busy keeping up with the trivia that pass for news actually to listen to one another and genuinely communicate.  The workshops will serve as antidotes to those impressions and will encourage us to act daily in ways that support our deepest values.

The Assembly is a truly grassroots event, one that we hope will inspire us all to keep working in peaceful ways to bring about justice in our daily lives—and beyond.
