Seattle FOR program on Poor Peoples Campaign, Zoom
November 21, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Sun Nov 21, 6:30 – 8 pm, Zoom
Seattle Fellowship of Reconciliation Chapter program meeting with Dorothy Van Soest and Romy Garcia, who are both members of the coordinating committee for the Washington Poor Peoples Campaign. They will show a half hour slideshow that gives an overview of the Poor Peoples Campaign. They will also speak about the interlocking, interconnected issues of militarism, the nuclear threat, ecological devastation, systemic racism and systemic poverty and how to address these issues together.
Romy Garcia migrated from the Philippines as a young boy. He became a student activist during high school in San Francisco, California to oppose the Proposition 13 which rolled back taxes and cut funds for education and social services. He joined the Union of Democratic Filipinos (KDP) to fight for democracy in the Philippines and against racial and national discrimination towards Filipinos. In the 80s he was active against Apartheid in South Africa and was involved with the Rainbow Coalition. He is an active Union member with WFSE Local 843, the Legacy of Equality, Leadership & Organizing; his Buddhist faith community, Soka Gakkai International (SGI) and has been a member of the Washington state Poor People’s Campaign Coordinating Committee since the summer of 2019. He resides on the Suquamish tribal land in Kitsap County with his wife, Fran, and is a proud father of two sons, Dante and Ruben.
Dorothy Van Soest attended college in Chicago at the height of the civil rights and anti-Vietnam war movements and since then has been a teacher, social worker, political and community activist, professor and university dean. She’s been active with the Poor People’s campaign since early 2018 and a member of our state coordinating committee since 2020. Many life experiences—from working to expose poor housing conditions when Dr. King’s family moved into a rundown Chicago tenement building … to teaching in segregated, inequitable public schools in Chicago and the Bronx … to group home parenting of seven emotionally disturbed adolescent girls in New York … to witnessing poverty and oppression of Indigenous people as a social worker on a Northern Minnesota reservation … and more—provide inspiration for what she calls her social justice novels. Dorothy and her wife, Susan, have lived in Seattle for twenty years.
