Here’s Why U.S. Elites Support Israel No Matter What

The U.S.-Israel relationship is unlike any other relationship the U.S. has with another nation-state. Israel is by far the biggest recipient of U.S. foreign aid in the world. Despite Israel being about .01 percent of the world’s population, Israel has received about 30% of U.S. foreign aid since World War II. They get about 4 billion dollars every year and have received almost $400 billion since 1945 if you adjust for inflation. Most of the money goes right back to the USA to purchase military weapons. The amount would be enough to end world hunger.
But what is more shocking is that this support is unconditional. It goes through Congress every year, basically unanimously. AIPAC, the American Political Action Committee has spent millions working to influence Democratic Congresspeople. Even right now when we see Israel committing atrocity after atrocity and the entire world is condemning the massacre of Gaza, the U.S. government is actually trying to send more money to Israel. The U.S. government also gives unconditional diplomatic cover in the United Nations.
Why? The United States is an empire, using economic and political means of domination, rather than the direct colonial rule the British used. The U.S. has over 800 military bases all over the world, just in case they decide force must be used. The goal is to control as much of the world’s natural resources and markets as possible.
Israel is our “landed aircraft carrier” in Middle East, a key region because of the oil and all the ship traffic going through the Suez Canal. Israel is a settler-colony in the same way the United States itself is a settler-colony. A settler-colony is a system of oppression that requires the displacement of indigenous peoples and the exploitation of their land and resources. Our settlement took place starting from Jamestown in 1607 up to the 1890 massacre at Wounded Knee. Israel’s started in 1948 and is still waging a genocide for the whole world to see on television.
However, more and more young people in the United States and Europe see the genocide in Gaza and the repression and land-grabbing in the West Bank for what it is: Israeli aggression. Some say it is the worst chapter in the history of Palestine and Israel.
A genuine solution to this crisis needs to address the problems of the Palestinian refugees, the Palestinian diaspora and the Palestinian minority inside Israel. “This can only be achieved within a one democratic state solution, in which everyone, Palestinian or Israeli, enjoys equal rights and has freedom of movement throughout all of historical Palestine.” (Ilan Pappe. A Very Short History of the Israel-Palestine Conflict. One World Publication, 2024, p.142)
Now (March 25, 2025) a recent cease-fire has ended. Here is a very dire Chris Hedges’ report: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6UXWK1M0l0
