Komalpreet, a student at the University of Washington in Seattle, has been working with and studying Kingian Nonviolence, as taught by Dr. Bernard Lafayette, one of Martin Luther King’s key “lieutenants” in the civil rights campaigns of the 50’s and 60’s and the national coordinator for the Poor People’s Campaign.  Through “Operation Change Makers” she plans to create a kindergarten through 12th grade institutionalized program sharing Kingian nonviolence with students that will create space in the classroom for students to discuss and organize around issues they care about. Her short-term goals for this current year are to develop an effective curriculum for seventh grade students at Meeker middle school in Kent Washington, a highly diverse city in South King County. The issues of social change that the group will organize around will be based on what students involved in the program choose. The program would work to develop engaged social change makers, who are equipped with the philosophy of Kingian Nonviolence to advocate for change.
