Seattle FOR Resolution on “Occupy Seattle”

Seattle FOR Resolution on “Occupy Seattle”
Whereas, the Fellowship of Reconciliation has stood for peace and social justice since its founding in 1914, and
Whereas, this stance led us to support the US Civil Rights movement in its infancy, including training and organizing supporters throughout the country, and
Whereas, Seattle FoR members continue their active involvement in a variety of peace and justice causes, including immigrants’ rights, prison reform, ending the death penalty, and environmental justice as well as ending imperial wars and nuclear domination, and
Whereas, a number of people in Seattle have organized a sit-in in support of the “Occupy Wall Street” actions in New York, called “Occupy Seattle”, and
Whereas, the organizers of Occupy Seattle have clearly indicated their strong commitment to the philosophy and methods of nonviolence so effectively championed by FoR for so many years,
Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, that the Seattle Chapter of the Fellowship of Reconciliation expresses our gratitude and support for the commitment to nonviolence expressed by the people of Occupy Seattle, and
Resolved, that the Seattle Chapter of the Fellowship of Reconciliation offers our resources to assist the people of Occupy Seattle: the inspiring stories and empowering philosophical insights of our history, the training in nonviolent struggle that our members can supply, and the opportunities to present their own stories at our gatherings, and
Resolved, that the Seattle Chapter of the Fellowship of Reconciliation pledges to welcome any of the people of Occupy Seattle at our gatherings, including the next one on breaking political deadlock.
Adopted, on behalf of the Seattle Chapter, by its Steering Committee, on October 5, 2011, in Seattle, Washington.
Signed,
Jonathan Betz-Zall, Co-Chair
